Some Useful USMLE Step 1 Tips for the Applicants

For MD students in the USA also called USMLE is always considered an important examination. USMLE stands for United States Medical License Examination. As the name suggests, to practice as a physician in the USA you need to attain licensing through undergoing this exam. The USMLE Step 1 of the examination is also commonly called the boards.

The test is conducted by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). Apart from understanding the course for preparing for this exam, you need to know some tips that will help you prepare for this exam with more conviction.

Knowing the Exam Format

Knowing the exam format helps people better qualify for the exam. This is not the case for the USMLE Step 1 exam. It is difficult to pass the test; as it is complicated. The total exam happens on a single day for eight hours. This is quite exhausting for the students, though this is the exam format.

There will be seven sections on your exam paper, and each section will come around 40 questions. The questions are multiple choices based, and you do not need to write anything. You have to tick the right answer for the question. The total number of questions will be around 280, and thus you will get 1 minute 30 seconds for answering each question.

Use Breaks Carefully

Candidates are allowed to take small breaks during the examination and total 45 minutes break is allocated for each candidate. Now, you can take a maximum of 6 breaks. There is also a provision for an optional 15 minutes tutorial period. At this tutorial period, you shall learn how to answer the questions properly.

Make Application Error Free

To avoid confusion during exams or avoid hassles, you need to apply for the exam accurately. Students have to apply for the test via NBME. However, that is only applicable for the students of the USA and Canada. Students abroad have to apply for the test through Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Subjects That You Need to Cover

For USMLE Step 1, you need to cover certain subjects. The subjects that you must study are Biostatistics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Cell Biology, medical ethics, nutrition, aging, etc. Knowing them is important to score good marks in the examination.

Minimum Score for Passing

Since this is a licensing exam, just passing out with a minimum score would be good. To pass the step 1 exam, you need to score at least 192. Scoring 225 is good enough as this is the standard average score.
